Today is my husband’s birthday. Watching the excitement on my toddlers’ faces this morning has left me full.
They made their dad cards earlier this week, hiding them in their secret places to make sure he did not see them too early. Every day they would go and look at their creations, laughing and placing their fingers upon their lips.
To add to the gifts came breakfast in bed. I have been married for five years. I have NEVER brought Jackson breakfast in bed. He was completely in shock. So was my kitchen!
We entered, candles lit upon a piece of toast, homemade cards in hand. We began to sing, waking up the sleeping dad. His face lit up with such joy at the sight of them. However, my kids’ faces put his own to shame. They could barely contain their excitement.
“It is more blessed to give than to receive.” This was the phrase which circled my mind all morning. I saw it played out today. I have not seen my kids, in particular my daughter, so happy to do something for someone else. Her own birthday joys pale in comparison to the way her face lit up as she entered her dad’s presence.
These little “me, myself, and I” toddlers, so in love with their dad they only wished to bring him joy.
My soul is full today, so very, very full. I only wish for one more thing: to never forget the unmatched beauty of a giving heart.
What about you?? When was a time that either you or your child felt such excitement to do something for someone else? I would love to hear the story!
Happy birthday to your hubby! Looks like you guys had a nice celebration. My husband’s birthday is tomorrow so we are making our cards and wrapping his gift tonight while he is out. Why did I leave this to the very last second? Ugh.

How true this is, Sasha! Giving creates a spark in our souls that can not be replicated. I love that you encouraged your kids to write your husband notes and then hide them! Oh, they must have felt SO much anticipation! π I’m inspired by the mom and wife you are. Way to treat your husband so well on his special day!

Aw, Marla, you are so sweet! Believe me, I am not the typical “breakfast in bed” type wife. He was in quite shock from it! π However, even I felt the joy in the sacrifice, the giving. Perhaps there will be more bacon coming his way soon. π

Sasha your post is beautifully written! Thank you for sharing this. It brought back memories of when I was a little girl. I would make for my Dad pictures with gum wrappers. Proudly my Dad would hang them up on the wall. I must of made five pages full. On Birthdays and Christmas I would collect all my dimes I earned for going to bed early and buy my Dad tiny glass animal nick knacks. I was so excited. My Dad passed away a little bit over a year ago. I am so glad that I have these memories. My mom gave me his nick knack collection. It is a real treasure. And another treasure she gave me is my Dad’s handkerchiefs. I learned to sew when I was eight and I had stitched little pig characters on them. My Dad never used them and he kept them safe in his drawer. I have a treasure box for my kids to collect the things that they make and give. My mom is doing the same for her Grand kids. Great memories for all!

Lisa, I cannot express how much this story touches my heart and brings tears to my eyes. What a wonderful dad you had. I am so sorry for your loss, but equally as happy you have such beautiful memories of him. This is such a great idea to follow suit in! I think I am going to do so as well!

Happy birthday to your hubby!
My oldest son loves celebrating everyone’s birthdays. He loves to make a big deal. This morning I was woke up by him at my bedside asking “Is Grandma Carole going to have a birthday party?”
Personally my sister and I have been planning a Disney World Vacation since July. We are taking our parents with us, something my mom has wished for since the day she found out she was having grandkids. So my sister and I had to wait for the perfect moment. See our video of the surprise: http://dailydoseofdilemma.wordpress.com/2014/10/27/walt-disney-surprise/

Thank you for the reminder to teach our children about loving acts of kindness for others. It’s easy to overlook this when you’re just trying to keep up with your day.

Yes, I know what you mean! Sometimes it takes a very intention reason, like someone’s birthday. I hope I can continue this giving spirit, in both my children and myself, even on the days when there really is no “need” for it.

I just had my birthday too! The second my daughters got up and saw me, they sang me a Happy Birthday song. It was the sweetest thing ever. They also made me cards, they told their dad that he had to take them shopping for mommy’s gift, then they asked me to bake a cake, so they could decorated for my birthday. Seeing them getting so excited about my birthday was the best present ever.
