Katie’s dad was a tough man, never showing affection, never saying “I love you.” Katie tried hard to win his favor but to no avail. In middle school, she was given her first make up kit. Beyond excited, she dabbed a little here and a little there.
She was now beautiful,
she just knew it.
Timidly, she approached her father, knowing this one time his approval would finally be gained.
“It’s not enough,” came his reply.
He made her follow him back over to the make up kit, taking the brushes and beginning to cake it on. More and more was applied to her face as she fought back the stinging tears. Finally, he simply stopped and walked away.
Katie’s dad did not deserve her.
He was not a father, simply the reason she was born.
We admire men based on their careers, positions, athletic abilities.
What about Katie? Did she care how much money her father made, what position he held at work, how fast he could run or throw a ball?
It is the fathers, the true fathers, who are the unsung heroes.
The men who sacrifice their time, their money, their lives for the betterment of their families.
It is the one helping walk the floors at night with a screaming baby.
Working for hours on end to turn around and buy a crib, a pair of shoes, a car, an education.
Trading in guy’s night for family time.
Cheering loudest in the stands, even when his child’s athletics are less than great.
Waiting up to make sure his daughter arrives home safety.
Beaming as he watches his children walk across the stage, diploma in hand.
Freely allowing the tears to flow as he gives his little girl away at the altar.
To all the unsung heroes out there this Father’s day, may I be the first to say thank you. You may or may not ever get the big promotion, the pat on the back, the mansions or the millions, and yet you are priceless. Your name may never find itself on the billboard or the big screen. It is, however, the most important name of them all: Dad.
You are hero of the ones who really matter.
Thank you to my own husband, the greatest dad I have ever met. I love you more than words can ever say.

Thanks Shane! I completely agree with you, it is two parts making a whole–a complete hero and a solid foundation on which children are given the ability to grow and thrive. My parents divorced when I was 12 and I never had a relationship with my father after that. He passed away last July. I’m SO thankful that my children have an amazing dad who is always there for them. What a beautiful tribute to all the great dads out there!! 🙂

I am so sorry for your loss. Even if you were not the close, it can never be easy to lose a parent. I am so happy you have loving husband though and your children are blessed with such a great dad! Make sure to give him a little extra love this weekend! 😉
