“My Dream is to be a Mommy” Came the Timid Reply

IMG_0485

The librarian asked the children a question: “What do you dream about?” A plethora of answers were spouted out. My daughter stated she dreamt about pink cupcakes, and I do not doubt her words for a second. Then, one little girl shyly stated she dreamed about being a mommy. As soon as she admitted such she gave a timid smile and quickly bowed her head.

Is her dream a foolish notion?

Was her timidity deserved for stating something so ridiculous as simply being a mom? What about a doctor, an engineer, a teacher? A mom, that is just a side note, not what you spend your life working towards. . .

Right?

What if her dream is a valid one?

What if little girls could dream of a life where they live and breathe for someone else?

What if they were allowed to have this be their main dream, not just a side note to their existence?

I stay home with my children. Some moms go to work. Neither decision is better than the other. What we DO does not determine who we ARE. For those of us with children under wing, we ARE moms, first and foremost.

We ARE the reason they jump out of bed each morning and laugh each night.

It is our words which cause a smile to his lips, a tear to her eye.

We have the most incredible and terrifying job of raising human beings–human beings! We are shaping living, breathing souls. All else seems to fade pretty quickly in comparison.

What a beautiful dream, sweet girl. I pray you will one day find its fulfillment. Then, as they lay your baby, your world, in your arms, you will know it was better than anything you could have imagined; more magical than words would ever describe.

Life’s journey will take you to many wonderful places, yet none will ever come close to the greatest journey of them all:

Being Mommy.

  1. What a lovely dream 🙂 nowadays it’s expected that girls will want careers, jobs, etc ‘instead of’ kids as if the two just have to be mutually exclusive. It’s refreshing to see a girl trying to break that stereotype and say what she wants 🙂

    1. Yes, I loved hearing her state such an “old fashioned” dream! From the look on her mom’s face I don’t think I was the only one either. I’m sure at that moment her mom suddenly knew all she did was worth it!

  2. My daughter often tells me she wants to be a mommy when she grows up. The first few times she said it I cringed – not because she wants to be a mommy, but because I bought into the notion that kids should dream of professions out of the house. Now when she says it I beam with pride. I must be doing something right if she wants to be a mommy when she grows up (and for Halloween this year too).

  3. Thanks for this post! I so needed it today. Maternity leave is drawing to a close and I’m suffocated by the thoughts of work, pumping, and strangers consoling my baby. I want to stay home so

  4. Stupid phone – end of thought was… I want to stay home so much, so it’s good to be reminded that I’m still a mom. I just have two jobs

    1. Oh, how wonderful to be living your little girl dream!! I grew up thinking being a mom was the least of my desires and yet now I could not imagine how empty my life would be without my children in it!

  5. So sweet!

My four-year old and I had a conversation that I was reminded of when I read your post:

Her: is it hard being a mom?
    Me:yes, sometimes
Her: it looks like it’s harder than I thought it would be but it seems awesome to have your own kids
Her: sometimes it’s hard…why do you ask? Do I seem stressed or like I’m having fun?
    Her: stressed and having fun
Me: well I love it, but yes it can be hard
Her: when are the times when it makes you stressed?
Her: mostly when kids are having a hard time obeying, throwing fits, or fighting with each other
Her: oh ok, I think I can obey next time
Me: you do? Thanks! I’m having a lot of fun right now

  6. Oh my heart. I hope my little boy dreams of being a daddy & dreams of marrying someone who wants to be a mommy–first and foremost. I needed this. Making the decision to be a stay at home mommy hasn’t been easy. Sometimes I feel like I’m not doing enough–even though in my heart of hearts, I know that mothering this little boy is the most important job there is.

    1. I know exactly what you mean Keri, like we are not making a big enough contribution on society, when all along we are choosing to give ourselves 24/7 to another person–somewhat ironic thinking it seems. 🙂 What a beautiful hope to have for our boys as well, to be there first and foremost for their families. What a world we would live in if all chose to live this way.

  7. I agree. What if we allowed the dream of motherhood to be enough? Didn’t W.R. Wallace say that the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world? You have a beautiful way with words.
